Gorkha. The Larke Pass trek, which had been affected by snowfall, has reopened. Trekkers had been unable to cross Larke Pass in the Manaslu region after the rain and snowfall that began on Asoj 9.
Bhuwan Ojha, information officer at the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP), said 21 foreigners and 15 Nepali guides and helpers crossed Larke Pass on Thursday and reached Bhimthang in Manang. ‘Trekkers have started walking over Larke Pass after five days,’ he said. ‘With 21 foreigners and 15 guides and helpers crossing Larke Pass today, it will be easier from tomorrow.’
Up to seven feet of snow had built up on Larke Pass after continuous snowfall. ‘Now that a trail has been made and trekkers walked it today (Thursday), it will be easier for other trekkers to follow the same trail from tomorrow,’ he said.
He said a lot of snow has piled up at the crossing point. He added that a group of 32 trekkers and Nepali guides has already reached Dharmashala to cross Larke Pass on Friday. ‘This is the main season for crossing Larke Pass. The weather has cleared and the snow is melting, so trekkers can now cross Larke Pass more easily,’ Ojha said.
Trekkers visiting the Manaslu region cross the 5,106-metre Larke Pass to reach Bhimthang in Manang. The trek has become a popular choice among trekkers recently.
MCAP has also urged trekkers to be careful, as snow still covers the trail from Dharmashala to Bhimthang. Trekkers had been staying at various hotels in the Manaslu region after snow disrupted the Larke Pass trek for five days. With the weather clearing, they have begun trekking again.
